President

Greetings to club members, friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAMs!

The Club’s  Website software is being worked on.  It’s time for a design change. The D-Star repeater has been temporarily relocated, until we can get another suitable site, preferably with free internet access.

The clubs 2M repeater is fully operational.  There were some issues that were previously reported, and do not appear to be affecting communication.  If you notice a problem with it, please let us know.  There are a number of ‘jammers’, causing interference.  Please take note of time and location, and any other details.  Send all inquiries and issues to info@kc2ra.org.

This month’s meeting will be a hands-on lab!   We have some Velleman electronic kits that we will be building, the difficulty level is moderate. We have limited kits, so we ask that the ‘Experts’assist the beginners with their assembly.

We could use volunteers for events, please contact us at info@kc2ra.org

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

Last month’s meeting was a hands-on- lab kit build. We had a few good ‘kit’ building experts helping out the
new-bees with some easy kits. I would like to thank the guys for helping them out.. We will be doing this
hands-on kit building presentation again.

This month there is a very large HAM flea market in Dayton OH. You can view the action live at:
http://w5kub.com/ Gary, Andy, and a few other members will make the trip this year. There is an amazing
assortment of all kinds of “Stuff”! I miss it, and hope to get there again next year!
May 7th, was the New York City joint ARES/MARS simplex communication exercise from 8:00am to 7:00 pm. The
exercise assumed that there was a loss of power, internet and cell phone service due to severe weather. The
participants were asked to give a report of their local situation, public facilities, and operational
conditions. This simulated a disaster test had a very high participation by our local HAM’s. The results
suppressed the MARS group, who did not expect such a very large participation..

This month’s Tuesday meeting, we had hoped to discuss Software Defined Radio, but Gary is getting ready to go to
Dayton. We will do Moon Bounce, SDR, Mesh Networks, Win-link in future meetings. It’s also not too late, we
could still discuss plans for Field Day. We need to put together a Field Day committee and find a site, for
those that are interested!

We will also discuss changes to the WEB site, and some upgrading that is desperately needed. The format of the
club newsletter would also be discussed. We are open to suggestions on improvements the readers would like
incorporated in to the WEB site or News Letter. Please send us anything HAM related, that you think would be
interesting to have a club presentation during a meeting main to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

It’s Summer, time to get out of the house and join your fellow HAMs, get on the air, meet up with some old friends and make new ones!

List of the Summer events club members are participating in:

- National Night Out, Tuesday of August 1, on the Staten Island beach was a blast!  We set up a

table full of HAM flyers, and portable backpack radio gear to demonstrate.  I didn’t get a

chance to ‘play’ radio, was too busy meeting old friends, and making new contacts.  There were

several people that approached me with an interest in taking the HAM Technician class with us

 later this year.

- International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (Always held on the third full weekend of August)

Saturday – Sunday, August 19-20, 2017.  There are over 10 lighthouses within reach in the five

boroughs.  Find one close to you and set up portable operation!!  You can also try looking

 for them on spotting networks.

- Total Solar Eclipse will take place on Monday, August 21, 2017 about 02:00 pm EDT.

I will be part of the “Eclipse-Mob” a crowd sourcing effort to conduct a low-frequency radio

wave propagation experiment.  I have built a special receiver to take RF samples and live

stream the data to George Mason University and the University of Massachusetts.

If the weather permits, I will be setting up my HF radios at the Princes Bay Lighthouse on SI.

It is open from 06:00 am to 08:00 pm.

Here is a very interesting link about the Eclipse event/s that are happening on Aug 21st.:

News Updates:

We are looking in to doing a free HAM Technician (2) day weekend class and test.  We have always gotten a great response from the participants of the hands-on class, and will be doing this class again this winter.  The class will be open to ALL, and is free, including the testing!!

The IRLP & D-Star server needs to be re-located to get internet service needed for their operation.

The KC2RA 2M club repeater has been up and running very well for the past several months with out any issues.  I am looking for some help getting the “Club”-net back on the air.  A good time for me to run the net is after 09:00 PM.  Topic’s will be HAM and PC related... tips-tricks-antennas, some crazy distance doing QRP... maybe some Morse code...

Become Radioactive!   Come to the KCRA meetings!  Learn something, participating in our Hands-On-Labs!  The CLUB needs your support at our monthly meetings!  If you have any ideas that pertain to amateur radio, we would like to hear from you.
