Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

This month the KCRA Executive Board is open for nominations from the full members, and shall close with the October membership meeting. At the time of this writing, there are opening on the board for:  Technical Chairperson.  Next month, November, members will cast a vote, and finalize the nominations for next year’s KCRA Board of Directors.

This months meeting we will have a special presentation from the National Guard on Citizen Preparedness starting promptly at 06:45 pm.

September was a very full month for club and ARES events.

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

Last month’s Operation-Santa at JFK we had a very good turnout for operators! 26 local HAM’s assisted us with about four thousand special children, all wanting for Santa to arrive on a Jet!  It was a fun event for those of you that never participated in an ARES event before.

Our club, along with NYCRA and NYC ARES attended HRU at Briarcliffe College the beginning of the month.  There was a much larger turnout this year, and several new lectures were added.

This month’s meeting, Andy will be demonstrating how to tune up a radio for optimal performance.

Februarys’ meeting we will have a guest speaker, Walter KA2RGI, demonstrate the principles of antenna basics.  He will visually show you with ‘live’ RF how Omni directional and beam antennas work. It is a very interesting demonstration for all levels, even if you never built one.

This spring we will be doing Satellite DX hopefully in Owle’s head park with the assistance of a guest lecturer from AMSAT.  Peter is a member of AMSAT and has hands on experience building Satellites, and is an avid sat-hunter using portable handheld equipment.  We will be doing this demonstration on a sunny spring weekend, everyone is invited for picnic in the park.

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

Last month, October, there were two events the Club participated in at Camp Pouch.

The Boy Scout, Big Apple Jamboree at Camp Pouch was not as crowded as it was last year… The Scouts were at the other end of the camp, and only a few of the more venturous ones found the HAM shack.  The Guys were working the NY QSO party, but would stop for all JOTA stations, and spend time with the Scouts.

December 10th, Richmond County ARES is doing the Operation-Santa at JFK.  We are looking for at least 20 operators to help with this event.  Over 4,000 special children are entertained in a hanger provided by the Port Authority Police.  They are served snacks & refreshments, receive toys and watch Macy’s Santa Claus arrive via Delta Air Lines shuttle while they celebrate the season. It is a spectacular experience.  ARES will provide communication support, eyes and ears for the organizers and public safety.  If you are interested, please Email This email address is being protected from spambots. The clubs end of year Holiday Party will be held 03:30 pm Saturday, December 20th, at the Hibachi Grill Supreme Buffet, 1501 Forest Ave., Staten Island.  The price will be $20.

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

Last month, Andy KC2GOW, demonstrated a station monitor  along with several handhelds analyzing various
radio’s performance .

This Februarys’ meeting we will have a guest speaker, Walter KA2RGI, demonstrate the principles
of antenna basics.  He will visually show you with ‘live’ RF how Omni directional and beam
antennas work. It is a very interesting demonstration for all levels, even if you never built
one.  Walter is an Extra Class Operator who enjoys many aspect of the hobby and has held various
positions and appointments within Amateur Radio.  You can look up all his information on QRZ, he
is a very active HAM person.

I don’t know who was following the K1N DX expedition to Navassa Island, one of the rarest island
activations… they won't be active again for at least 10 years!  Several members of our club were able to
make contact with them on several bands. KB2BSL PH:10m, 15m, 20m; KC2GOW CW: 12m, 20m, 160m & PH:10m, 15m, 20m.
You never know, until you try it! For more information look at the K1N site http://www.navassadx.com/

Starting February 17, the FCC no longer will routinely issue paper license documents.  You will
have to look on their site for instructions on how to get a paper copy, if you would like one.

Have 10 minutes, try tuning into the ISS. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station
(ARISS) anticipates that the ham radio contacts between students and the space station will take
place between May 1 and December 31, 2015. The ARRL website has more information.  ARISS,
primarily focuses on encouraging young people’s interest in science, technology, engineering, and
math. Calls are coordinated with schools around the world, where an assembly hall of hundreds of
students might listen to a radio (usually provided by local amateur radio operators) for a few
brief minutes to reach into space and ask the astronaut crews about living and working on board.
Stay tuned for this springs weekend in-the-field Satellite hunting at Owle’s Head Park in
Brooklyn.  We will have the assistance of a guest lecturer, Peter W2JV from AMSAT.
