Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA and fellow HAM’s!
Last month’s meeting, Charlie, KC2PED and Joe, N2TEE presentation and a classroom demonstration on using amateur space satellites was done very well.  The guys did a good job, on very short notice!  Joe discussed WEB sites, and demonstrated the different Satellite orbits.  Charlie had sides, and captured audio and pictures of his experience finding satellites.
May 17-19, members of the Club are taking a trip to Ohio, 2013 Dayton Hamvention!  We will have a hospitality suite (table) available again located in the outdoor flea market.  Live up to date information and pictures will be posted on the WEB site as time permits.  If you are wondering on our progress, and location, you can track us with the APRS link:

We had a false start for the “Elmering 101” sessions, but will start it up again soon, this summer.  We are holding a two day weekend FREE Technician class this summer at Staten Island University.  It is open to all ages.  Look at our WEB site for more information, where to get the book and how to sign up.  The second day of class we will hold a free Technician test for those that attended the class.
The next meeting is May 21.  John KB2RIF will be talking about 6m, the 'magic' band.  How to work it, and make great contacts with some very simple setups!
Field-Day is coming up very soon, June 22-23.  This year it will be held on the grounds of the Boy Scout Camp Pouch on Staten Island.  We will be operating out of a first class HAM shack.  Nearby, there bathroom facilities, covered picnic pavilion and bar-b-queue pits.  We are looking for volunteers to assist in setting up.  If you would like to operate, please let us know of your attentions in advance, space in the shack is limited.  Look on the WEB site for more information.

Last month’s meeting, John KB2RIF, gave a lecture on the ‘Magic Band’, 6 meters.  We will be putting that information to good use during this month’s Field day!   The satellite planning committee, Charlie, KC2PED and Joe N2TEE, are getting ready to set up a first-class station for Field day.  The radio will be operational depending on the timing of a pass and the weather.
May 17-19, members of the Club took a trip to the Dayton Ohio Hamvention!  We had a great time, found lots of bargains, and talked to a lot of interesting people!  Our hospitality suite (table) was in the outdoor flea market, handing out cold beverages to members and friends that stopped by.
The FREE Technician class Email lessons have started. Look at our WEB site for more information, where to get the book and how to sign up.  The second day of class we will hold a free Technician test for those that attended the class.

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!
This month, nominations for the KCRA board should be submitted.  There is one opening for the Technical director.  Jim, KC2LEB has to step down from that position.  Next month, November, members will cast a vote, and finalize the nominations for next year’s Board of Directors.
I would like to thank the VE team members for the free Technician classes that they held this year!  Gary KB2BSL, Jim KC2LEB, Russ KC2LSB, Charlie WA2GUG, Charlie KC2PED and Joe N2TEE, for a great job with the classes!!!
September, Gary and myself were able to work QRP off the stern of the Carnival ship Splendor.  We did pretty good distances with only a few watts!  Between us we worked Germany, Italy, Canada and the States.  Most of our contacts were over a thousand miles!  I was using a 5 band antenna, and Gary had the ‘miracle whip’ antenna.
The KCRA has been officially requested by the Boy Scouts, to be present at Pouch Camp on the weekend of October 11-14 for the Big Apple Jamboree, with a special emphasis on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM.  Anyone interested in joining us there, should send a note to This email address is being protected from spambots. November, members of the Board will be attending the Hudson Division Awards luncheon.  The club has donated $100 dollars towards the ARRL Spectrum Defense Fund.

Last weekend, Gary KB2BSL, Jim KC2LEB, Russ KC2LSB and Charlie WA2GUG held a free two day EC-001 class. The EmComm-001 certification class was designed to provide basic knowledge and tools for any emergency communications volunteer.  It included elements of ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System and ICS-700: National Incident Management System (NIMS).  They had a 100% pass rate for the test that was given the second day. They did an excellent job at teaching the class!!

New ARRL and KCRA members will be able to join for a special combination price of only $50 for their first year, this is a savings of over $20.00. Additional details are available here.

September 10, I will be doing a special event station from Governors Island using portable equipment. We will have a station set up on 20M or 40M depending on band conditions.  I will try to monitor the KC2RA repeater.  I hope to be operating from sometime after 11:00 am until 3:30 pm.

This month the KCRA Executive Board is open for nominations from the full members, and shall close with the October membership meeting. At the time of this writing, all board members are running.

Greetings to club members, Friends of the KCRA, and all fellow HAM’s!

For this month’s meeting we will have a two way video conversation with an old friend, Gordon West, WB6NOA.

The Boy Scout, Big Apple Jamboree at Camp Pouch was very successful.  All the guys that helped us out had a great time.  At times we had our hands full, with some large groups of kids, and demonstrating how a radio works.  The Guys made many JOTA contacts from Scouts all over the world.  The Guys also worked the NY QSO party, with great results.

Gary KB2BSL and I attended the Hudson Division Awards luncheon.  We meet up with old friends, and discussed various issues with the ARRL NLI Section Manager Jim Mezey, W2KFV Hudson Division Director Mike N2YBB, ARES and HRU representatives.
